Default Finding a Merchant Account

I'm in the UK and have recently set up an online shop running zencart. At the moment I only have a few customers and am getting paid through paypal. I've been looking at some of my visitors and it seems like many of them are putting items in their cart and then abandoning their purchases as soon as they get through to paypal. Is this normal?

After a lot of research on google I found out about merchant accounts. I knew nothing about them before! I found links to your forum and am hoping that you will be able to answer my questions.

If I set up a merchant account do you think this would solve problems with abandoned orders? If so which merchant account do you recommend and how much will it cost?

I've read through some of the posts on the blog but can't seem to figure it all out. It looks like I will pay a percentage per transaction?

    Thank you

    Shirley,

There's two parts to consider to the merchant account. The first part is the payment capture, and I'd recommend www.sagepay.com for this.

You need to connect this up to your merchant account with your bank account, I have used and can recomment Natwest's streamline product. More info on www.natwest.com

You normally pay a flat fee (about 20p) + 2-3% per transaction depending on volume and card type.
