RBS Worldpay UK Review
This review looks at Worldpay in the UK. A Worldpay review for US businesses will be uploaded shortly.
RBS Worldpay is one of the most popular merchant account providers on the Internet. The company was started in 1993 as Streamline before eventually all being re-branded as Worldpay.
Global
RBS Worldpay is a truly global merchant account. It's owned by RBS which is one of the worlds biggest banks. They operate in 45 countries and accept 120 different currencies. You can then receive your payments in one of 14 currencies. Worldpay really simplifies the process of accepting payments internationally.
Trust
When choosing a merchant account provider trust is very important. They will be handling your money and if you can't trust them then this will be a major problem. The company has been running for over 20 years which shows they are trustworthy.
Also over 50 different checks are conducted per transaction to ensure that you don't suffer from fraud.
Which Businesses Suit WorldPay?
One of the great things about Worldpay is that it can be tailored to your own requirements. Different packages can be added onto your merchant account to provide extra functions. It's ideal for online businesses and offline businesses to. Anyone from hotels, insurance companies and local shops will be able to use Worldpay effectively.
Products
Worldpay offer a number of different types of merchant accounts and payment gateways. You will need to choose which package will best suit your business although you can also customize packages if you wish.
Online
Online accounts are some of the most popular options. These allow you to accept payments on the Internet and are ideally sited tor ecommerce sites and subscription sites.
Business Gateway
Business Gateway costs £19.95 per month in the UK. This includes 350 free transactions per month and uses a merchant account you already have. If you don't already have a merchant account then Business Gateway Plus might be better for you.
Business Gateway Plus
Business Gateway plus is ideal for small businesses and people who are new to accepting online payments. This not only includes the gateway to accept online payments but also a merchant account. This costs £15 per month in the UK plus 3.35% + 15p per transaction.
Both Business Gateway and Business Gateway plus can be used to accept payments in multiple currencies without worrying about exchange rates. However you will only be able to accept one payment currency for your initial setup fee, other currencies will need to be added for additional set up fees.
Face to Face Payments
Face to Face payments are ideal for use in shops. In the UK small chip and pin machines are provided to process the payments. Worldpay allow you to either rent the POS terminals or buy one of your own to use. They also make it possible to accept all of the major credit and debit cards all round the world.
Mail and Phone Payments
If you are trying to run a mail order business then you will need to be able to accept phone payments. This can either be added onto Business gateway plus or used on its own.
Fees
Worldpay is surprisingly competitive. There is a one off setup fee which starts at £75 for the Business Gateway Plus.
If you want to add mail and phone order payments onto your account then this will cost a one off setup fee of £100. The setup fee for recurring payments is also £100.
Accepting additional currencies isn't free either. Each additional currency will need to be added for a cost of £50. If you have any disputed payments then Worldpay will charge £10 per disputed payment.
Getting Paid
One of the biggest problems with Worldpay is the time that it takes to get your money. Depending on the perceived risk of your business you might also be asked to make a security deposit which will prevent you withdrawing any money until your business has made so much money through the account.
Worldpay will send you the money once a month direct into your bank account. For any business switching from PayPal to a merchant account it can be difficult in terms of cash flow.
Integration
Worldpay doesnt work in the same way as most other merchant accounts, this actually works much more like PayPal as standard. When a user orders something from your site they will be redirected to the Worldpay website where they input their credit card details. This provides a secure environment and means you don't have to worry about any security checks.
However this is not a seamless experience for your customers which could result in loosing some of them. There is an answer though and that's to use XML integration. This is free to apply for and will allow you to seamlessly integrate the payment gateway into your website. Check out the post on RBS Invisible XML integration for more information.
Worldpay is a good all round payment provider which makes it really simple to accept international payments.

Keep away from worldpay
This company has the most horrible customer service you could find in industry. This company shut down my merchant account with no reason, showing me the part of terms saying that "they can do whatever they want", so they could never explain to me what triggered my account to be closed. Next, I had over $15,000 processed and I was told they will remit me the funds in 6 months (typical stealing methods they are used to do). Now its been over a year and few months, whenever I email them - they do not respond. And if I call them, there is nobody who could help me. If I call to US office, they have no idea at all. So keep away from this company full of crooks.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that. As you had both your Google Checkout account and Worldpay account closed without reason what was actually going on with your business at the time? Was there anything happening that would make these companies think that fraud was possible?
Did you get any warning from Worldpay? I've never really had a problem with them myself

I dont think so, i am currently using Moneris - Canadian credit card processing company. I have been with them for awhile, i have had no chargebacks, not even a single retrieval request. So it could not be fraud, or anything like that. For Worldpay - I provided them customers information: driver license, credit card pictures, and cardholders were OK to call and verify the transactions on the phone. WorldPay said they are not interested into it, they just want to hold the funds. With Google, while moneris gateway was down i recommended customers to check out by GoogleCheckout, so they did. And result was that transactions were approved, products were shipped and account was closed. i tried to figure out the reasons, but they just dont give it to me. Credit card transactions surly were not fraudulent, i have spoken with every customer myself. So these companies like Google Checkout or Worldpay I believe are very risky, unless you barely make any monies in the first place, so you dont set the bait for them.

Oh Ok I see.
I was not accusing you of fraud. Just wondered whether Worldpay would think that somehow.
So what happens with your $15k+? Has that been returned to customers? or are they holding onto that?
It's quite scary to hear actually, i've only just started using WorldPay myself.
Have you tried phoning them?
Hope you get your problem sorted
Andrew
